Great Bridge/Hickory Family YMCA
Youth Basketball is a volunteer-coached program designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball to children who are new to the game while helping returning players strengthen and refine their skills. Players will focus on ball control, shooting techniques, offensive and defensive tactics, rules and regulations of the game, teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play in a fun, supportive environment. As a YMCA Youth Sports Volunteer Coach, you're helping young athletes build confidence, develop skills, and feel a true sense of belonging. Our youth sports programs focus on more than just the game. Each season creates a positive, inclusive environment where kids of all abilities are encouraged to learn, grow, and have fun. With one practice during the week and a game on the weekend, volunteer coaches lead skill development, teamwork activities, and friendly competition while modeling the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility, and faith. No coaching experience? No problem. The Y provides training, resources, and ongoing support so you feel confident leading your team. Whether you are a parent, student, or community member, your time and encouragement can have a lasting impact on a child's experience. Recreational coaches typically commit to an 8-week season, volunteering about 2 hours per week for 1-hour practices and 1-hour games. The 3–5 age group practices for 30 minutes and then plays a 30-minute game immediately afterward, usually on Saturdays, for a total commitment of about 1 hour per week. Volunteers must complete the required onboarding steps, including training and safety protocols, before the season begins. Competitive Coaches (REC+) commit to a 9-week season, volunteering about 3.5 hours per week for two 1-hour practices and 1.5- hour games. At the Y, every child plays, every voice matters, and every moment is an opportunity to grow. Join us in creating a fun, safe, and meaningful experience for youth in our community. Sign up today and help shape the next generation through basketball.
